HOW-TO GUIDE · UK
Can you sand engineered wood floors?
Short answer: yes, most engineered wood floors can be sanded — but only if the real-oak wear layer on top is thick enough to survive it. The number of times you can re-sand depends almost entirely on that top-layer thickness, not the plank's overall depth.
What matters for engineered wood flooring in UK
- Wear layer under 2mm: do not sand — screen-and-recoat only, or you'll cut through to the plywood core.
- 2–3mm wear layer: one light sand in its lifetime, removing roughly 0.5–0.8mm.
- 4mm wear layer: two full sand-and-refinish cycles, comparable to a thin solid board.
- 6mm+ wear layer: three or more sands — effectively treated like solid oak for restoration.
- Click-fit engineered planks need extra care at the joints; aggressive sanding can split the tongues.
- UFH installs: dust-extract sanding only, and always re-acclimatise before recoating.

Typical UK use cases
Scratched living-room oak
Surface scratches and dulled lacquer on a 14/3mm board — one sand, re-stain, hard-wax oil.
Pet-damaged hallway
Deep gouges in a 15/4mm engineered plank — full sand and matt lacquer reset.
Faded UFH kitchen
Sun-bleached planks over underfloor heating — screen-and-recoat instead of a full sand.

UK FAQs
- How do I know my wear-layer thickness?
- Pull a threshold strip or lift a beading section — the top oak layer above the plywood core is measurable in millimetres. If you only have offcuts, check the original spec sheet.
- How many times can engineered wood be sanded?
- Once for a 2mm wear layer, twice for 4mm, and three or more times for 6mm+. Each pass removes 0.5–0.8mm.
- Is it cheaper to sand or replace?
- Sanding is typically £25–£35/m² in the UK; replacement with a mid-range engineered oak runs £80–£120/m² supplied and fitted. Sand if the wear layer allows.
- Can you sand engineered wood with underfloor heating?
- Yes, but use a dust-extracted belt sander, keep heat off for 48 hours before and after, and use a UFH-rated lacquer or oil.
Summary
Engineered wood is sandable in most cases, but the wear-layer thickness decides whether it's one careful pass or a long-term restoration option.
